Essential Question: How would you describe and analyze the life and art of Frida Kahlo?
Concept Map Integration Plan: After a guided instruction lesson of Frida Kahlo, I will provide students with a concept map that each student will independently fill out describing Kahlo and her art. The class will then work in small groups of 4-5 students to discuss their individual descriptions, compare and contrast responses, and discuss the reasoning behind the chosen adjectives. Student will fill in additional descriptive words generated from other students in their group, enter them on a collaborative concept map via SmartBoard, and save to use as a study guide for further work on Kahlo.
Brief description of the Instruction Plan This lesson is intended to have students use the proper form of adjectives (using distinctions between masculine/feminine and singular/plural) while discussing an important cultural figure in Mexican art.

Additional Technology Integration to be Used This particular lesson plan includes the use of four technology mediums. First, will be the use of Animoto. I will create a slide show of photos of Kahlo’s real life as well as images of her art. These images will be taken from an illustrated book about Kahlo and shown to traditional Mexican music from that period to reinforce cultural objectives. The concept map is the next technology used. I have created the concept map using PowerPoint; it will be distributed in paper form, but we will make a final version using the classroom SmartBoard to easily add and edit ideas. This version, a compilation of all students’ ideas, will then be available for viewing and editing on the classroom blog at Blogger.com.
Description of the ‘relative advantage’ of all technology being used in this lesson: In this lesson, technology is a clear and definitive advantage to presenting art and photos and then creating, editing, and sharing ideas produced by the class. First, students may respond better to the use of Animoto to show Kahlo’s work and photos from her life. It is the best way to share these images to the entire class, which can be difficult to do by trying to show the images from the book in which they were obtained. Using just the book may be problematic because every student may not be able to see the images clearly from their seat in the classroom. So, presenting them as a slideshow, accompanied with traditional music, adds an element of interest, excitement, and simply better vision to the important images. This slideshow can be saved and edited to show to future classes as well. I will not have to walk up and down the classroom row, ensuring that each student sees the images that are to be used in the assignments. Next, the use of PowerPoint and SmartBoard are great because they allow easy moving, adding, changing, and editing to the concept map itself. This way, students can better share ideas without having to erase on paper. These presentations can be saved for further editing as well. Lastly, is the use of the Blog. The class will be able to access materials used, created, or edited in class from home to use as study guides, templates, and review.
